Agency Banking Certificate

The need to find ways for everyone to access financial services led to the development of agency banking in the 2000s. Agency banking refers to the use of third parties for the provision of banking and other financial services to the public. This concept enables banks and other financial institutions to extend their services to locations where they may not have physical presence.

Since 2013 when the Central Bank of Nigeria released the guidelines on the operations and management of agency banking, the initiative has resulted in the ubiquity of financial service agents across Nigeria, resulting in a significant and growing portion of financial transactions being conducted through them.

The growth in its importance as the critical part of the value chain in enhancing financial inclusion has necessitated the need to deepen the knowledge of the operators(agents).

It is in view of this that the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria is pleased to introduce a respectable and widely accepted Agency Banking Certification Programme for intending, upcoming and existing professionals to address the capacity challenges in the ecosystem and strengthen financial inclusion in the country.

The programme provides an all-around knowledge, practical engagement with industry experts, and participation in standard procedures for conducting an agent banking business in Nigeria. By this, the agents would have the right knowledge and skill sets to deliver quality customer experience with the required credibility.

Earning the Certification will not only stand the holders out, it will grant them membership of a professional body which will provide the assurance of their legitimacy and professional competence to handle specialized banking services.

It will equally be a key requirement for the Central Bank of Nigeria and intervention organisations, pre-qualification for participating in major government projects, and access to business finance.

ELIGIBILITY

The Programme will be opened to all individuals from all disciplines and all sectors of the economy who are interested in becoming Certified Agent Bankers provided they meet the minimum requirements for membership registration, as approved by the Institute from time to time.
